Duff Moisture Code

Numerical rating of the average moisture content of loosely compacted organic layers of moderate depth.

Description & Technical Information

Description

The Duff Moisture Code (DMC) is a numeric rating of the average moisture content of loosely compacted organic layers of moderate depth. This code gives an indication of fuel consumption in moderate duff layers and medium-size woody material. This is a variable of the Fire Weather Index rating system designed and adopted by the Canadian Forest Service. The dataset has been developed through a collaboration between the Joint Research Centre and ECMWF under the umbrella of the European Forest Fire Information (EFFIS) system and the Global Wildfires Information System (GWIS), a joint initiative of the GEO and the Copernicus Work Programs.
