ECMWF Integrated Forecasting System (IFS)

ECMWF Integrated Forecasting System (IFS)

Description & Technical Information

Description

The ECMWF Integrated Forecasting System (ECMWF-IFS) covers the global domain and consists of several components: an atmospheric general circulation model, an ocean wave model, a land surface model, an ocean general circulation model and perturbation models for the data assimilation and generation of forecast ensembles. Different configurations of the components mentioned above are run operationally to produce forecasts for the medium range (up to 15 days), extended range (up to 46 days) and seasonal range (up to 7 months). A large number of output fields are achieved from the operational runs of the IFS. The latest model (IFS cycle 43r1) is operational since the 22 nd November 2016 but forecasts are available (from the Esuite) since August 2016.
