MetCoOp Ensemble Prediction System (MEPS)

MEPS (The MetCoOp Ensemble Prediction System) is a 10-member short-range convection permitting ensemble prediction system.

Description & Technical Information

Description

MEPS is a 10-member short-range convection permitting ensemble prediction system that has been operational since November 2016. MEPS has a horizontal resolution of 2.5 km which makes it especially useful in resolving mesoscale meteorological phenomena such as organised convective storms or lake-snow-effect.
FMI, the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) and the Norwegian Meteorological Institute (met.no) have agreed about an operational co-operation on Numerical Weather Prediction from pre-processing of observations to model output. The Project MetCoOp has done the operational organization for joint NWP that is called MEPS. MEPS uses the ECMWF as a boundary model.
The provided products are: a) 6h accumulated rainfall probability maps, b) 6h accumulated snowfall probability maps for wet and dry snowfall, c) Wind gust probability maps, d) Mean wind probability maps, e) Fractiles of 6-hourly precipitation accumulation, f) Fractiles of mean wind at 10 m, g) Fractiles of gust speeds at 10 m, h) Probability maps of freezing rain and drizzle, i) 2-m temperature fractiles, j) Probability of 1h precipitation, k) Probability of 24h precipitation, and k) Probability of 1h snowfall.
