Precipitation type forecasting algorithm

FMI's algorithm proceses  NWP models (ECMWF, HIRLAM and GFS) and the best guess of the meteorologists to forecast the type of precipitation (the identified classes are: rain, drizzle, freezing rain, freezing drizzle, sleet and snow).

Description

FMI’s algorithm proceses  NWP models (ECMWF, HIRLAM and GFS) and the best guess of the meteorologists to forecast the type of precipitation (the identified classes are: rain, drizzle, freezing rain, freezing drizzle, sleet and snow).

The probabilistic version of the algorithm utilizes the forecasts of a poor man ensemble prediction system (PEPS) including previous model runs.
